Onslaught: Sounds of violence

30/05/11  ||  revenant

A fly drifted lazily and seemingly aimlessly in a circular motion above the boardroom table. Lee Ding watched the fly few a few seconds, composing himself before turning his glaring eye back onto his staff. They visibly blanched under his fierce gaze. Sue Ridge looked flushed. Helen Back had already been through enough. Joe King wasn’t taking this too seriously. He turned to Russ Tinayle, hoping to hammer the point home.

“Unless we think of something quick, we don’t have a front page for tomorrow’s edition.” Lee began. “Guys, I need a fucking idea. Anything. Otherwise we’ll have to run some stupid cute animal story on the front, and you know how much I hate those.”

Each of his staff glanced wearily at each other. Then there was movement. Jack Pott.

“You have an idea Jack?”

“Well” Jack began nervously, “I did hear there’s a new Onslaught album out.”

“What? How exactly is that fucking news” Lee fired back.

“Well, they are a band that was around back in the 80’s and now they’ve made a comeback”.

“So fucking what? Forbidden, Heathen and a bunch of other fuckers did the same thing. We didn’t run front page stories for them. Besides, this is their second album since their reunion.” Lee thought for a second and then his eyes narrowed. “Is there anything significant or new in this release?”

“Ummm…” Jack hesitated, “not really. Actually it’s pretty generic modern thrash to be honest. It’s fast, has crunching groovey breaks, plenty of rapid fire kick drumming, but nothing that nobody else hasn’t already done in the past. It’s a bit better than the new Destruction and Legion of the Damned releases though. Some of the choruses are kinda catchy too. For what it is, it really isn’t all that bad. In fact, we might hit the end of the year and say this was one of the better thrash releases of 2011.”

Lee glanced and Dick Tate, who had been busily scribbling notes. “What do you think, Dick?”

“I don’t know. Does the world really need to hear about another thrash band doing the same old thing, even if they are one of the better ones?”

“Exactly what I was thinking” Lee said. “Another thrash band returning to the fold and producing the same old sound is a redundant story. No fucking way am I running it front page. Next idea!”

Silence again. Damn, thought Lee, why did Gerry Atrick have to retire, he was always good for ideas.

“OK” he said finally, “I want you to all go back to your desks and think some more. Meeting adjourned.” He left the room and decided to call Hugh Ray for some cheer. Damn these slow news days.
